Hey, I’m Juan! Welcome to my cozy digital shelter

I’m a UX/UI designer, front-end developer, teacher, and speaker from Argentina. No, I’m not a unicorn, and yes, I’m ready to step up for any challenge.

Let's work together!

About me

I'm a UX/UI designer, front-end developer, teacher and speaker born in Argentina, who is passionate about learning new things and helping others to learn new things.

I've worked for companies all around the globe, as well as an outsourcing partner for many web and design agencies. I team up with both design and development squads to craft visually appealing and user-friendly interfaces, using the latest tooling and techniques the industry has to offer, with a strong focus on accessibility, performance, and versatility.

I’m currently committed to empowering people through education at Bloc, an online design and coding boot camp part of Thinkful Inc., where I mentor, grade and help students land a new job related to technology. However, old habits die hard, and I just can’t stop hacking things together, so write me or hire me via Toptal: I’d love to to hear about your project.

Education & Teaching

I've studied at the University of Buenos Aires, but I was always curious about programming languages. I started to learn about front-end languages when I was a kid and as I grew older, I relied heavily on the development community to learn new things through dev courses, tutorials, Q&As on StackOverflow: That's the reason why I'm so eager to help others learn new stuff, because I feel like I need to return to the community all that I've learned from them.

I've mentored several students in the past at my former university as well as in other coding boot camps like Coderhouse. From all my previous experiences both as a student and as a teacher, I found online education to be truly empowering and accessible to everyone: It was for me, and that's why I pour everything I have into this experience.

I’ve joined Bloc and Thinkful with the need to deepen my knowledge and strengthen my possibilities of helping others succeed in both Design and Development areas. I'm a Mentor, Grading Team Member, and Technical Coach of the Designer Track.

Before that, I coordinated with other teachers a non-profit program called "Diseño sin fines de lucro", an initiative to connect NGOs with students willing to help them communicate their actions effectively to the community for a certain period of time.

Online Courses

I started developing websites when I was 15 and Flash was the thing 🙈. Since then, I’ve been trying to improve my skills and stay up-to-date with new methods and technology constantly. As a self-taught person, everything I know is due to the contribution of countless members of the developer community, and that's why I take very seriously to share what I've learned back.

Here in South America is hard to find free and quality content about web design and development in Spanish. A lot of developers with high potential aren't able to improve their skills, because of the lack of quality content in our native language.

I'm on a quest to try to change that: I'm trying to deliver free, quality content to the Hispanic development community through short and focused video courses on design and web development: From Markdown to Linux Terminal, from HTML to CSS, I spent hundreds of hours creating content to help Hispanic developers be better at their jobs.

Public Speaking & Writing

I'm also a public speaker. I've been invited to speak about social impact on design, accessibility, design tips for developers, amongst other topics. What I really enjoy about these experiences, is that I'm the one who got the most out of them, not only the people who listen to my talk.

While doing public speaking, I’ve learned a lot about people, their behaviors, about the discipline, other cultures, I’ve managed to beat my own ghosts, and to understand that I’m not the only one having imposter syndrome.

That's why I'm constantly looking for opportunities in the field. If you want me to speak at your event, feel free to drop me a line.

Articles & Blog Posts

There's something liberating in writing. I write to explain what I know: I write to learn what I don't know. I run my own blog on Medium, and I've also been invited to write as a guest for CSS-Tricks and LogRocket. For shorter thoughts, follow me on Twitter.

Design & Dev Work

So, if you've got this far, you're hopefully considering hiring me to teach your colleagues, speak at your event or conference, or to help you with any design/development work you might have. But you might be also wondering, "where's this guy portfolio"?

Well, my selected freelance work is on Toptal, Behance and Dribbble. My work had been featured in Interaction and published worldwide. Take a quick look below:

Whenever I want to learn something new (and believe me, I’m learning new stuff all the time), I need to create something meaningful to me, in order to better grasp the technology/framework I'm trying to learn. That's why I always end up with these side-projects, built to scratch my own itches: I even redesigned my entire website because I wanted to master CSS Grid 😅.

What I like about these projects is that they're unconstrained: They're built on top of my design standards and code quality, without any type of friction with clients, stakeholders whatsoever. That means it'll be much easier for you to get a sense of what I'm capable of when given freedom and trust in my work.

But obviously, you'll want me to pair up with your existing Design or Dev teams, and it is to be expected to deal with some back & forth in order to come up with a better product based on user, colleague and client feedback. That's why here are a few other success stories to show you:

No problem! Due to the type of contracts I've signed with several of the companies listed below, I can't publicly show the work I've done for them. If you still have doubts, get in touch and we can schedule a call to show you a couple more examples.

Contact Me

You did it! You've made it up to the Contact section of my website. Now, let's make it count! If you want to hire me to design and/or develop your website/app, or to request a workshop or talk at your event, don't hesitate to write me. I would love to hear from you!

That's all, folks!
